About: Southmead Hospital Southmead Hospital Bristol BS10 5NB

Whilst out walking one morning I broke my leg and was taken to the hospital. My leg wound itself received prompt and efficient treatment. The staff I came into contact with were lovely and very friendly. However I was at the hospital alone and no one thought to address my basic needs as a human being. I was at the hospital from 8.00 AM until 5.00 PM.. I was offered no food,no drink,no painkillers and bearing in mind my immobility no toilet. Twice taxi's were requested to take me home but they did not turn up. I was given a pair of crutches which I clearly could not cope with. I was being sent home to an empty house ( my wife was struggling to get home from holiday and would not be back in Bristol until early evening). No one asked my situation at home re access to the house, downstairs toilet. A friend did pick me up in the end but it was a struggle to get me into the house.(subsequently it has needed the assistance of two hospital ambulance crews manhandling me into the house). These are fundamental care issues which are being lost by staff struggling to work with systems and there is no joined up working or communications. I can only reiterate that this is no complaint against the staff I met as individuals they were great. The experience since the first day has not been good either. Attended for an operation a week later but this was cancelled. A mix up with transport meant I did not get home until 5.00 PM and then had to starve myself again from midnight in preparation for the operation the next day which I was told was not a certainty. The rooms in the admission wards are white, sterile and lonely if no one has the time to talk to you. Quite frankly I was stir crazy after spending the majority of two days in these rooms. The operation did happen (I think staff were taking pity on me by that stage) but I again had a long wait for transport and did not get home until 9.00 PM. Luckily for me I am resilient and have been able to get some assistance to get some help at home. What if I was elderly or just lived on my own? I can only request that the management of this hospital start treating its patients as human beings and consider basic fundamental needs as a right . Lovely Costa coffee shops may be great for making money from visitors but meanwhile patients are being left to starve ,dehydrate and pee themselves (not me luckily) in the hospital itself. This cannot be right or acceptable. I do not intend to make a formal complaint but I hope this review will be read by people in the position to address these basic care issues and make a difference.
