I was booked in to the Northern General for an operation to correct a rectal prolapse. As it got nearer to the time the condition began to be more and more painful. I was actually looking forward to the operation!! I met the surgeon about a week before, he was an American called Professor Nelson. He immediately put me at ease by his confident, good humoured approach. He came to see me on the ward the evening before the operation, so did the anaesthetist, a delightful young lady from Germany. Both of them were very relaxed and reassuring. This conveyed itself to me. The following day the operation was very successful thanks to my American and German friends together with all the staff on the ward who did a wonderful job. I can't thank them all enough.
"I was immediately put at ease"
