"I will never enter Southport Hospital again"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital

(as the patient),

During my stay, one particular auxiliary seemed to take every opportunity to humiliate me. Amongst some of her dialogue gems were, “oh he’s got MRSA and he’s incontinent” etc. Taking into account my condition and the mind bending effect of the drugs, compassion was never her forte. At one point, I had to ring my bell for two hours without any response. I phoned my wife at home, asking her to phone the hospital to discover why my bell was not being answered.

I woke up on the Sunday morning feeling very ill. I asked to see the doctor who started to examine me. As my doctor came on duty and came into my room to find out what was happening, on being informed he said no wonder you are ill because someone had turned off the oxygen, which should have been on for four hours which resulted in hypoxia. I believe that the staff nurse had turned it off before she went off duty the night before. I have only touched lightly on all the bad things, I found that it is futile to complain, if you are cheeky enough to do so, the ranks close and you get blanked. I have claimed I will never enter Southport Hospital under any circumstances.

Dear Jolly693

It is difficult for the Trust to comment on the issues you raise as we do not have enough details to investigate them thoroughly. We have Matrons on all wards available for patients to speak to whilst in hospital and they aim to deal with concerns when they are raised.

All complaints are taken seriously and we do try to learn from them. If you would like to put your concerns in writing to Mr Parry, Chief Executive, an investigation will be instigated and a full response will be sent.

Dear Jolly692

I am sorry to hear how disappointed you are following your recent stay in Southport Hospital. If you do decide to take up Matthew's suggestion to make a formal complaint, you will receive notification of the outcome of the investigation.

I know it is not always easy to raise your concerns whilst you are in the situation and also not feeling well. It is sometimes only afterwards that the full realisation of how you feel about your experience comes to light.

I am also sorry to hear that you do not wish to be a patient again at Southport Hospital.
