"In hospital 17days a harrowing experience."

About: Colchester General Hospital

Arrived to A&E for the 2nd time in 2 weeks, 1st time got diagnosed my right sided abdo pain as constipation, gave mepicolax & sent me home still in pain being sick, consultanr didnt even see if i okresuming diet & fluids! readmitted 2 & half weeks ago, my stay was worse than the 1st, i must admit the A&E staff were excellent, i arrived with my husband (as i didnt want to call ambulance as i was worried this would deny someone else of immediate attention) A&Ewere having the busiest day to date this year! but even in the madness they treated my pain quickly &made sue I was comfortable awaiting a doctor. Then my horror began, i got a bed back on Brightlingsea Ward, were I had been on my last visit , the nursing staff were caring & equally frustrated by the lack of diagnosis & treatment I had to put up with my consultant & his registrar. He felt it was either constipation or IBS?(even though my notes clearly show the only reason I have had admissions before over 20yrs to be treated with a keyhole op for adhesions at Colchester hosp) The consultantIwho seenme last 20yrs one of the best in the UK has retired, so I was put under his previous registrar whom was hell bent on the idea i didnt have adhesions! over the next 2 weeks only given me one xray(adhesions dont show up) filling me up on pain killers so he could then get me dealt with in outpatients?, his focus wasnt to do any further tests to at least get me diagonised,I had to keep updating to PALS service & my Wardmaster, after I complained my treatment was unfair with no resolve short or long term to findI out what was wrong then treatment by my consultant& registrar in 2nd week i in got worse, after i complained about lack of treatment, being in hospital so long without diagnosis & on strong painkillers, i have lost my job,my hubby is a war veteran with a kidney transplant, his results this month are not good, as i am his carer & he was worried about me, i told to the consultant, but he wouldntlisten to me,i have had adhesions 20yrs, if i cant manage them i go to hospital & treated with keyhole, i hadnt had probs for 5yrs before, .he wouldnt listen to me,i asked for 2nd opinion, the consultant he sent was even more anti adhesions ,so it wasnt a fair 1. on ThursI still in pain i was given half pkt picolaxon & enenema which did nothing to pass stools.the xray after this showed i was still full of stools,so i had to take 1pkt more of picolax, which gave more pain & still didnt pass , the doc said 1st it was constipation, then after 2nd picolax, registrar said have another xray & query adhesions? after 2nd xray,he said i ok to go home?ihadnt passed anything & said i should stop all pain killers, then did examine which left me worse in pain, patients around me said how bad i was treated. The consultant said my xray was ok? he wanted me out still vomiting in pain ,i am home more ill now but too scared to go to any hosp! has made me sad to be in UK NHS

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “Comment on General Surgery at RDEE4-Colchester General Hospital at 25/08/2014 21:52:42 ”, please? Many thanks Paul Searle, Head of Communications Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust info@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
