I was recently a patient on the surgical assessment ward at DRI. It is a very bust ward and the nurses and care assistants work non stop. No one really has to wait for long when they press the buzzer. It does take a while to see a Dr but I was told that they were doing emergency operations and because I was told that I didn't mind waiting because the nurses make sure that you don't have to wait for long for pain relief and always tell you what is happening. Their is one sister that can at times be quite argumentative with quite a few patients, her attitude is terrible and is always talking about herself and food. I felt sorry for the other nurses because they do say sorry for her all the time for her attitude. The staff on nights were fantastic, they are very busy and clearly short staffed but they try their best to give the patients everything that they need and work with a smile on their faces laughing and making other patients laugh as well. The day staff are very good as well but their is more off them. Their was an old lady who had dementia, all the staff told her what they were doing just so she knew that they were going to change her from one side to another so she wasn't scared. I was very scared to go to hospital but now I'm waiting for my gall bladder to be taken out and hope that they let me go back on that ward for my operations.
