"Doctor"

About: Dorking Hospital

I recently had a colposcopy at Dorking Hospital. I found the doctor to be abrasive, intimidating, and uncaring. On entering her room she did not greet me, or ask how I was feeling about the appointment. She sat me down, explained what abnormal smear results mean in their various gradings very briskly without making eye contact once, then sent me off to undress. She was dismissive of anything I said, and almost accusatory on a couple of occasions. I was given no choice. She simply dictated and made it clear that the final decisions were hers. I understand she needs to be happy with what is happening, but there are ways of communicating with patients and her way is appalling. When my colposcopy began, she simply shoved the speculum into me. Maybe "getting it over with quickly" is her way of not worrying patients, but I was incredibly uncomfortable and found the speculum was stinging my whole vagina - but didn't feel able to say as she had been so intimidating in her manner. She did not explain anything that was happening during the colposcopy, other than to warn me before she took my biopsies. One of which hurt like hell, which I appreciate she cannot help but nobody explained why that happened. She did make several comments during the exam but did not expand on them and I was in too much pain to ask her. I left the appointment shaken up, and sat sown outside and cried for 10 minutes, because of her manner. I never wanted to see her again. I thought maybe she had a bad day, or I was being too sensitive, so was willing to give her another chance. However, I saw a nurse yesterday for a routine appointment who asked how I was getting on. When I said I'd been to Dorking, she replied "oh yes, that doctor is a formidable woman isn't she?!" I asked if she meant the doctor I saw and she said "yes, I trained with her recently". I explained I had found her quite rude and uncaring, and the nurse replied "I think she cares about her clinic very much but she's done it so long she has forgotten how afraid her patients feel and lost her compassion for them as it's so normal to her" Which I take to mean all she cares about is her clinic and her stats, and not her patients. I am obviously not being overly sensitive and the doctor comes across this way to everyone. Needless to say I will be changing to a new colposcopist and advise anybody referred to this doctor not to expect any support or reassurance! She is practical, and I'm sure good at her job, but her people skills are severely lacking.

I am so sorry to hear of your bad experience. The clinic you attended is hosted by Dorking Healthcare who run the majority of the outpatient clinics at Dorking Hospital. The Dorking Hospital page on NHS Choices is hosted by CSH Surrey - who provide the inpatient beds and physiohterapy gym to the left as you enter the hospital. I am forwarding the content of your posting to Dorkign Healthcare today and will post their reply to your message as soon as I receive it. Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback, it is only by hearing about peoples experiences that organisations such as ourselves (CSH Surey) and Dorking Healthcare, can make adjustments to the way we do things to better suit the needs of our patients.
