"Terrible treatment of older people"

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

My sister, aged 70, has been in hospital since May 2014. She has been transferred on no less than six occasions during this time between Dryburn, Shottley Bridge and other wards within Dryburn. On Ward 5 where most of her stay has been her medical treatment has been constantly changed with No noticeable benefit to her. I have discovered that Ward 5 does not have a permanent Consultant but a different one each week. This obviously prevents good standards and quality of care due to lack of continuity. I believe this lack of continuity has resulted in her situation deteriorating. The staff on the ward are pleasant when approached for the most part. However one of the worse situations I have ever seen was a lady in the four bed unit my sister was in, sadly died. Her body was left in the unit for hours with only the bed curtain pulled. This greatly up set my sister's husband during visiting. He was horrified that his wife, who was bed bound, had to lie in the next bed to a deceased person. Why could this poor lady not have been in a single room, which they have, therefore giving her some dignity during her last moments. It is absolutely shocking and shows a total disregard for patients and there families. I have worked for 33 years as a registered nurse in Mental Health and seen many people die and never did the above situation arise. Disgraceful.
