"My community nurse is a waste of space!"

About: Central Lancashire PCT / Community nursing

(as the patient),

I live in Preston and I have found the community matron service useless. I feel let down by them. The matron is supposed to keep an eye on me, but I ask her to check on things and she doesn't follow them up. I asked her to looking into getting me a diabetic nurse, and to check on an appointment which I had been waiting weeks for but she didn't follow it up at all. As far as I'm concerned she's a waste of space! She even makes appointments with me and then doesn't turn up! Next time I see her, I'll tell her to leave it and not bother coming again. I've managed so far, even though I'm elderly and frail, so I guess i'll continue continue to manage alone.

Dear Only158

I am sorry to receive your comments outlining how you feel 'let down' and that your Community Matron is a 'waste of space'.

In order to ensure that your posting receive the fullest response possible, I will pass this to the service manager and a further response will be posted within two weeks.

I would just like to add that when you next see your nurse, instead of telling her not to come to see you again, please would you consider letting her know how you feel. This will make sure that she is aware and perhaps, if you were in agreement, let her try to provide you with the support that you need.

Dear Only158

Thank You for sharing your opinion with us as your thoughts and experiences are important to us when developing our service.

I am concerned to hear that in your experience you have found the service of little use. I am also concerned that you have felt let down and unsupported.

The aim of the service is to support you to self manage your condition. We have now developed a Duty Desk function that provides a single point of contact to the service Monday-Friday (Excluding bank Holidays at present) 8am to 6pm. This is operated on a rota system by different members of our team. May I suggest that if you feel unable to approach your Named Matron with regards to the issues you raise, you use this facility for any advice or support in managing your Long Term Condition. If you have a more urgent need then the person on the Duty Desk is also able to provide you with a visit.

The Telephone Number for the Duty Desk is 01772 777262. Alternatively I would be happy to discuss your concerns with you directly in order to improve the service you receive.
