"Doctor to patient care"

About: King George Hospital

Had a consultation with a hospital doctor today. Unfortunately I was very dissatisfied with this particular doctor. Firstly, the doctor failed to introduce herself, I've no idea to whom i was speaking to. The doctor's English was very poor and her manner was very rude, brash and arrogant. The recent test results I had were missing from my file and the doctor seemed to not want me to have the treatment i came to the hospital for. I was asked bluntly if i really wanted my operation - leaving me with second thoughts now. I wasn't told anything about the procedure and i had to keep asking the name of the procedure, the doctor didn't seem interested and said the condition i had wasn't life threatening and do i really want it. The doctor failed to show me any respect whilst examining me, seeming to be inpatient and hurried, and the doctor failed to introduce me to the guy in the room with us, the doctor then said he was a medical student. I wasn't told he'd be there and i wasn't asked if i objected to his prescence. The nurses i saw were very good and helpful though. I am now left with unanswered questions, felt rushed, my medical problem unimportant and reluctant to have my operation. A tiring day for me made worse by a rude and arrogant doctor. Why do they bother becoming doctors if they have no interest in people?

I’m very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your experience at our hospital. We operate one of the busiest hospitals in London, however there is never any excuse for our staff to be rude or make you feel unimportant. We are a University Hospital and regularly have medical students, but the doctor should have checked with you first that it was ok for the student to be present. To be able to look into this for you I will require more details from you. Please contact me via our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk. In the meantime, I will pass your comment onto the manager of this service. Yours sincerely Stephen Burgess Medical Director
