"great surgery let down by some poor nursing"

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital

I was treated at Blackburn for a hip operation. The operation to fix a dynamic screw in my hip went wel. In fact I had the option of being fully awake and the operating team kept me informed at every stage of the procedure. However, the nursing generally was not up to the same standard. Two incidents stand out. Firstly, on the evening of my admittance the nurse on duty in the ward left me covered in my own vomit even though she had seen that I was sick. After ten minutes I pressed the alert button and a health care assistant eventually came. Secondly, I pulled the emergency cord in the toilet by mistake later in my stay. It took ten to fifteen minutes before a staff member came. Surely this is far too long if someone was really in distress!! Lastly I would like to comment about the cleanliness. Generally it was OK. The ward was cleaned daily but I noticed that many of the ceilings in the hospital, especially in the Recovery Area, were dirty.

Many thanks for your feedback on your experience of our Orthopaedics service at Royal Blackburn Hospital, and thank-you for taking the time to do so. I will make sure both your appreciation and concerns about care are passed onto the team. I am very sorry to hear that your recent experience with us wasn't what you expected as we always strive to deliver safe, personal & effective care; and I will make sure that the ward matron and sister are made aware of your concerns about responsiveness to call bells. I will also pass on your comments about the cleanliness of the ward to our estates manager. If you would like to talk through your visit to us with one of our Patient Experience team so we can understand the bits of your experience that made this such a poor visit for you we would really value this so that we can try to improve things for every patient visiting our hospitals and services. You can either contact me (Wendy Stobbs) on 01254 734471 or email me on wendy.stobbs@elht.nhs.uk. Or if you prefer you can discuss further any concerns you may have about our services with our Customer Relations team on 01254 733700 or complaints@elht.nhs.uk who can advise you of your options in raising these concerns further. Many thanks for taking the time to comment and best wishes on your recovery Regards Wendy Stobbs, Patient Experience Facilitator
