"Most of the time the nurses on ..."

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus

(as a relative),

What I liked

Most of the time the nurses on the ward caring for my mother were wonderful and cared for her very well.

What could be improved

However 1 shift of nurses were appauling. At approx 12pm my mother's consultant had requested meds for her at 2pm and 6pm. After the shift change she waited until 7pm to get her first lots of meds. She was in pain and weak. Her consultant who visited again the next day was none too pleased and wanted to know what was going on, but by this time a new team of nurses had come on duty. The wards were not particularly clean with small piles of dust sitting in the corners. During my mother's 4 day stay the room she was in was not cleaned once, only the bin was emptied. Also when I went to put something in the bin in the toilet opposite my mothers room there were 2 cardboard trays half full of urine sitting on the floor in the toilet and there were still there 2 hours later when I left.

After my mother had been discharged she had to sit in the waiting room for 3 hours waiting for medication from the pharmacy to be brought up. My father could have fetched it saving my mother from sitting around unwell and uncomfortable for 3 hours, but was not given the option as it was the week end and the pharmacy was closed to patients.

Anything else?

My father saw a cleaner putting things into the clinical waste bin in my mothers room and questioned what could be put into the clinical waste bin as the lable clearly identified what could. However, the cleaner said anything could be put in the bin. Obviously, the clinical guidelines were not being properly followed in this case.
