"Children's A&E Care"

About: Basildon University Hospital

My four year old son collapsed this morning with no warning. We dialled 111 and was told to go to our GP's surgery. The surgery said they could not see him for three hours and suggested taking him to A&E. We were initially reluctant to do so as we did not want to waste A&Es time if it was something trivial, however we are so glad we did take him. We walked into the main A&E department and were immediately seen by a triage nurse. We were then immediately referred to the main desk where they took our details and sent us straight round to the Children's A&E department. As we entered we were met by two nurses who were already geared up, ready and waiting for him. We were ushered into an examination room where the nurses performed a very thorough but sensitive examination of my son. He was clearly frightened by the whole experience but the staff at A&E were jovial and light heated, which helped him to settle. We were given a comfortable cubicle in which to wait and more staff arrived to carry out further tests. My son was kept in A&E for about an hour and a half, during which time he was constantly monitored. Thankfully he recovered quickly and he was discharged. As we left, the staff involved took the time to say goodbye and wave him off, which made my son feel very important. We are extremely grateful to all the staff at the hospital and I cannot praise each and every one of them highly enough.

We are always pleased when relatives take the time to show their appreciation of the care provided to their loved ones, and were glad to hear that your son's recent experience in the Children's A&E Department at Basildon Hospital was a positive one. Your kind words will be shared with all those in the department. May we take this opporutnity to thank you once again and wish you and your son all the very best.
