I was prompted to write this review after realising that people don't often report their good experiences enough rather focus on the bad. My experience was entirely positive. During my 12 week scan the sonographer identified a very large ovarian cyst, 19cm in diameter. I had no symptoms so it came as a huge shock to learn I needed surgery. I was seen by a member of the gynaecology team with the hour (Thursday evening) and given a pre-op appointment for Monday, with surgery the following Monday. I was very impressed with how quickly I was seen as I was deemed an emergency case. All of the staff I encountered were brilliant, the surgeon put me at ease and was honest about the risks to myself and my baby. This was important to me as there was a risk of miscarriage, I was afraid and wanted to prepare myself mentally for what may happen. On the day of the surgery the anaesthetist and assistant had me smiling and relaxed as I drifted off to sleep, in contrast to a previous surgery I had as a child where I felt panicked and anxious as I went under. The nurses were absolutely rushed off their feet (they deserve medals!) but still gave me an outstanding level of care, nothing was too much trouble, even toast at 2am when I felt well enough to eat. They made sure my pain was managed despite being limited as to which drugs I could take because of the pregnancy. A student nurse even escorted me to the EPU for a scan the following morning as I had no idea at this point whether the baby was ok after the surgery. Thankfully all was well! The sonographer was gentle and caring given that I was in pain and very anxious. Upon discharge a nurse showed me how to give myself blood thinning injections, she filled my prescription and made sure I was confident before letting me leave. The advice given on aftercare was excellent too, from how to care for stitches to coping with gas pain. The ward was immaculately clean and there was a visible presence of cleaning staff who were also really friendly and chatted to me as they worked. I noticed that the nursing staff maintained good hygiene practices too such washing hands between patients etc. I have nothing but positive feedback and thanks for the staff of Ward 54, without them I'm not sure I would have my beautiful daughter in my arms today.
