I have a goitre - it is quite large and was very tight in my throat. My GP sent me to Medway hospital I had two FNAs that confirmed I did not have cancer - thank god.
The first FNA was carried out by a doctor - he wore scrubs and was very gentle and considerate. The procedure was okay. He said I would have to have my thyroid removed because it was full of cysts and showed me on the screen that there was only a small part of it that looked normal.
I then had to go for further tests - the doctor who carried out this FNA was a barbarian. He hurt me. Told me I didn't need pain relief as I wouldn't feel anything but the procedure was very painful and I bled quite a lot. He also did not wear scrubs but had his normal clothes on.
I felt shocked and shaken after the procedure. On the way home I became emotional and told my husband that I felt like I had been assaulted - he was very angry. My throat was very badly bruised for three weeks after. My throat was very sore and I also became very ill - depressed and like I had a virus.
I then started to develop further symptoms that I discussed with my GP - he said they was classic symptoms of an under active thyroid and told me to make a case for myself at the hospital during my next visit.
At my next appointment I explained my problems and was told there was nothing wrong with my thyroid. And the symptoms were nothing to do with my thyroid.
I said but I do have problems with my thyroid - it is enlarged, I have a big cyst and multiple smaller cysts and nodules - the first doctor had shown me.
I was dismissed and told the blood tests I had were normal and I probably had something else wrong with me not related to thyroid.
I went back to my GP to tell him as I still felt unwell - he was not happy about what was said to me but carried out further tests. Eventually he thought I may have an infection in my thyroid and gave me a very high course of antibiotics.
After 4 days on the medication I started to feel better.
Six months later I had to attend the ENT department again. They confirmed there was nothing wrong with my thyroid but have referred me to a thyroid specialist? ? ?
Saying that I was given that information 3 months ago and have not yet received an appointment.
I am confused.
I think that the NHS do not want to diagnose thyroid disease to too many people - there must be a quota. Maybe this is to do with free prescriptions if you are on thyroid medication. Maybe they just hope that half of us die off and melt away.
