"Post natal care"

About: St Richard's Hospital

After a difficult first time in labour, totalling 42hrs and ending in an emergency section, I wasn't given any pain relief despite having back to back contractions. I felt desperate and wasn't sure what to do. Once I was kept in hospital and had my section, the midwives on delivery suite were quick to notice my baby was in distress, and my baby girl was delivered an hour later. I felt that the post natal ward let the experience down. It was not due to being busy or lack of staff. The midwife even said they had lots of empty beds. My vital signs weren't monitored enough. I know this as I am a nurse and work on a surgical ward. The second day my observations were taken 4 hourly as there was a student nurse who, bless her, didn't have much to do. My experience with my son was better. A midwife friend had arranged for her friend to look after me. Apart from my spinal waring off during the operation, and them giving me a double dose of paracetamol in one hour, my experience was better. But once again, once on tangmere ward, the after care wasn't up to scratch. Finally discharged at 7pm, which was just too late. I'm due to go in to have my third baby next week, & it's my third section. Here's hoping for a good experience!

Response from St Richard's Hospital

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your experiences of birth at St Richards Hospital and particularly of care on Tangmere Ward and we are sorry to hear that it did not meet your expectations on the first two occasisions. We hope that you will find that care on Tangmere Ward is much improved from your previous experience as staff on the ward are working hard to try to ensure that all care is individualised to meet the needs of each woman, her baby and family. We have developed several new initiatives to support women on the post natal ward including developing a new information leaflet specifically for women following CS so we very much hope you will enjoy your experience on this occasion.
