"Pharmacy"

About: Southmead Hospital

My first stay overnight in the new hospital having spent 6 weeks in Carrington & T 4 years ago, what a massive improvement, although the staff were the same, caring & thoughtful, But the same old downside, Pharmacy !! another long wait for antibiotics, Cleared by the Consultant by 11am, my wound having been redressed by 12 o,clock I was free to leave. Being aware from my last stay I arranged for lift home to arrive at 4pm, thinking that would give Pharmacy ample time. Even though my nurse chased the Pharmacy and I had a conversation, agreed a little bad tempered with a rather rude lady who said she was the ward pharmacist, I eventually left the ward at 5 pm with a temporary batch of antibiotics to carry me over until my 6 week course could be collected. During this time I was in a ward that may have been required for another patient. Why is it not possible to issue a prescription that I could have taken to the local chemist on the way home saving everyone time, hassle & me in a better frame of mind. The food in the new hospital is a fantastic improvement, even the sandwiches tasted like sandwiches should do not the chilled cardboard of my last visit. Parking, I am disabled and aware of the space problems but why are the disabled bays at the front used as long term parking instead of just drop off ? with maybe just a 1 hour restriction to get patients to or from the wards, we were made aware on arrival at 11am that many of the cars in the bays had been parked all morning, my wife had to dump me and the find a space before she could take me to the ward, All are minor problems to a wonderful new hospital.

Dear Mr Palmer – thank you for you constructive feedback which has been shared with the relevant departments and managers. I am pleases that generally you found your experience to be improved from your last stay. I regret that your discharge was still troubled and accept that as a whole the Trust can do more to speed up the process, because as you say bed spaces are always at a premium. Please be assured this is a priority for the Trust as a whole and action is being taken to address this. A process, which involves non-clinical managers spending time on wards to observe and review discharge planning and arrangements, is being employed to identify delays and spread best practice. Please see my answers to other postings in respect of the temporary problems with parking and access for disabled and able bodied visitors, which will hopefully be resolved once the second phase of the site redevelopment is completed. Thank you again for taking the time and trouble to post your feedback. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
