My mother has been admitted onto AMU several times in recent weeks and my family have found the staff, especially the ward clerk to be hostile and rude. They have made family feel very uncomfortable when ringing to enquire about my mother and indeed have asked that only one member of the family should ring the ward!! I appreciate this is a very busy ward, but perhaps staff should be made more aware of how to speak to concerned relatives. I am a senior nurse myself, working in a very busy/demanding department and when family ring through all staff are polite and courteous recognising that this can be a very worrying/stressful time for family/carers. I must add at this point that the nursing staff have appeared to treat my mother very well, however the discharge procedures could be an area for revision and staff should make sure that care has been reinstated before a patient is discharged home.
