"Physio gym session....I was horrified."

About: Clacton Hospital

Last week I visited the physio department where my mother was attending her regular gym physio session, I was horrified when I looked in to see the exercises people were doing....incorrectly. Out of the 10 or 12 people in there at least 7 were doing exercises that would cause them more injury and pain than good. Obviously i do not know what each person is being treated for but I do know as a therapist myself that the positions people were in, were appalling. For instance, an older lady was sitting on a normal chair, lifting both her legs up, with a ball in between her ankles. She was arched forward, her lower back was not supported and she was lifting around 50lb torque of weight, all impacting in her lower back. Another lady around same age was sitting, hips forward, lower back not supported, and lifting her legs, one at a time, with ankle weights strapped on. Again, all the weight of her leg and ankle weights pulling on her lower back. A woman was put on to a wobble board, and leant forward, so again all pressure on her lower back. Why not bend slightly at the knees, straighten the lower back and still be in arms reach to help herself. A gentleman was put on the lay down bike, his knees were out sideways, his posture terrible. He was then moved to the upright bike, where at all times there should be some bend in the knee, his seat was so night up,his legs /knees over extended and snapped back as he rotated,,, pulling the knees, hips and all ligaments. To be honest it was all I could do to stop myself coming in and correcting the physio in the room. I can se what they were trying to achieve and done correctly would help, but everyone was so out of position, I can not see how this kind of therapy is going to help instead of hurt your patience. More care in correct positiing is required. We trust physios and other professionals to help us and make us better......please make these small changes and ensure people are receiving effective exercise, not exercise that will hinder and hurt them. I am a trained therapist, I work in musculoskeletal realignment and rehabilitation....... Please please make positive changes. Patients, please ensure you are receiving the right advice, get informed, check out some website etc, if it hurts, don't do it, ask for adjustments.... Get informed and empowered, physio's, please update your practices. Thank you.
