"Life Changing Cataract Surgery"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

October 2012 I was told I had cataracts developing in both eyes, from then until April 2014 I had 6 changes of glasses,at the end of April I was told I was not legal to drive. My sight had been deteriorating fairly quickly,my distance vision was going from bad to worse but my near vision had improved. I asked for an appointment at Bolton Eye Unit and I saw the consultant who was prepared to remove the cataract on my right eye,but he did tell me the risks associated with it. Since I was 18 ,when I was diagnosed with presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome in my left eye (no central vision, very little peripheral vision,no treatment available ) I have relied on my right eye . Also 10 years ago I had laser surgery on both eyes to prevent acute angle glaucoma, this was successful (done at Bolton Eye Unit ),but a possible side effect is the iris "sticking" to the lens. This had happened to my right eye, which meant that cataract surgery would be very risky. After discussion with the consultant I decided to go ahead with the surgery.I was unable to drive, and in a very few years my sight would have deteriorated to an unimaginable level. I had a right phaco cataract removal with pupiloplasty on 29th July,on the way home from the hospital my eye opened and I could see.The theatre team were wonderful,I didn't feel a thing during the operation,I had no pain afterwards. I had a check up on 4th August with the consultant and he was very pleased with my eye,I have an appointment for a further check up in November. By September I will have new glasses and will be able to drive again, and from September 8th I can swim ,gym and fly. I am indebted to the consultant and his team,I cannot explain my feelings when my eye opened and I could see.
