"ashby ward"

About: The Bradgate Mental Health Unit

something of a regular to mental health wards in the past , i hadnt been admitted in 5 years and had never been to ashby ward. im not sure if the changes were part of the general wards way of doing things or part of all the improvements that are apparently being made in the beginning i wasnt really well enough to understand what was going on and my father had to take control of ensuring all was as it should be , there was an issue surrounding my not being administered my insulin at first and some staff didnt seen entirely clued up on the use of insulin in general (or at least my specific one) that said however i was pleasantly surprised by how keen all the staff seemed to be in supporting me through my time there i was constantly told 'we are here to support you ' and everyone was so approachable and generally friendly that once i was more settled someone as notoriously difficult to get to 'open up' as myself found myself wanting to make the most positive use possible of my time there and i was encouraged to communicate by writing as i was finding speech very hard, they even had me assessed by a speech therapist which at the time i didnt understand but now i see as something that they were being very thorough. any issues raised were dealt with and the staff worked excellently with my father to do the best for me . where possible i was kept fully involved in my care and my wishes and opinions were taken into account. i was treated as a person not a situation. as i began to feel better i was delighted to get to know the staff and genuinely did not encounter a single staff member who seemed to not be doing anything but their best, they all seemed to have a good sense of humour too at the very least a ready smile thankfully my stay was very short when it came for decisions to be made regarding discharge again i was fully involved and after taking on board my opinions and those of the support network around me at home i was happily discharged this was a whole new experience for me and my father also agrees that the staff were fantastic . they seem a brilliant bunch of people doing their very best and such a welcome change from previous experiences, i think they should all be commended

Hi harrysmum, Thank you for taking time to post your thoughts about your care on Ashby Ward. We’re very happy your stay was a short one and that you are feeling better and were able to return home. We’re delighted to hear how positive you feel about your stay, and that you felt so supported and cared for by our staff. They have worked very hard to implement an intensive programme of improvements across our wards at the Bradgate Unit. Your feedback shows us that this work – and their dedication – is benefiting our patients and we’ve made sure your comments have been shared with all the staff on the ward. Of course we know there is still more we can do and we’re sorry to hear you didn’t feel quite as well supported with administration of your insulin. We have already begun a new drive to improve the physical health care of patients on our Bradgate wards. We have appointed our first physical health nurse and, as part of her role, she is developing training programmes both for qualified and unqualified nursing staff to cover key areas, including the care of patients with diabetes.
