"Nurse super glued my daughters eye shut"

We are very sorry to hear that your granddaughter's recent attendance at the Emergency Department has caused you both such understandable distress. As your comments are posted anonymously, it is not possible to investigate and respond in detail. However, we would be very keen to understand what happened during your visit and as such would very pleased if you would contact Matron McNab on 0191 233 6161 if you were willing to provide the details we need to review the care she received. It may be useful to explain that the Childrens' Emergency Department has Paediatric Nurse Practitioners working in the area. These are all senior Emergency department/ paediatric sisters who have completed further education and training to enable them to independently see and treat children who attend the department with specific injuries /illnesses. The Nurse Practitioner can assess the child and arrange any investigations required e.g. bloods or x-rays, they will then interpret the results and formulate a management plan and complete the patient's treatment and discharge or arrange referral to a speciality team if required. These practitioners are supported by the Emergency Department clinicians, who are available should they be required. Can we apologise if this was not explained to you when the nurse practitioner examined your granddaughter. Please be assured that if the nurse practitioner was of the opinion that your granddaughter's presenting complaint was beyond her scope of practice then she would have requested a medical opinion. The Matron has discussed your feedback about the wound glue with the Senior sister in Childrens' Emergency Department and would wish to apologise to your granddaughter and yourself for the distress this caused. Sister will speak to the all of the nursing staff in the paediatric department to make them aware of the need to introduce themselves and for the Nurse Practitioner to explain their role to patients. In addition she will also make them aware of your experiencing regarding the use of the wound glue. Again may we apologise that service was not to the standard we aim to deliver and for the distress caused to you and your granddaughter.
