"Not very inpressed with the treatment at this hospital"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted on Tuesday, then went on to B4 ward station 3. The name above bed hadnt been changed. They put in notes that I was eating. On the Wednesday I didnt eat anything all day so I pulled them up about it. I kept asking them for something as I hadn't opened bowels since Tuesday and still got nothing. On the Friday a student nurse came on, came round and said the name over bed and I said it wasn't me. She look amazed and she changed the name on board. Still hadnt had anything to open my bowels so I told the doctor I am discharging myself. Had to wait for tablets before I could go home and guess what the tablets for opening my bowels were in the bag I brought out. Not very inpressed with the treatment at this hospital

Response from Jackie Dietrich, Communications Manager, Communications and Patient Experience, The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay on ward B4. We are sorry you were unimpressed with the treatment you received from us and that this made you take the decision to discharge yourself.

You are correct that the name above your bed should have been changed when you were admitted. The lead nurse responsible for ward B4 has been informed about this and has reinforced with all staff members the importance of updating names above beds. Please be assured, however, that we would always check the identity of patients using their wrist band (and confirm with the patient personally where possible) before administering treatment or medication.

It is difficult to comment further without your own details and reviewing your medical notes, but if you wished to contact the ward’s lead nurse on (01384) 456111 extension 2665 she would be happy to look into the issues you have raised. If you prefer, you can contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on free phone 0800 073 0510 who will look into your concerns on your behalf.
