I attended the audiology dept to pick up my hearing aid, I lost one of my hearing aids and was told I would have to pay for this or i would not be able to have my original hearing aid, I have had hearing aids for around 8 years and have never lost them or broken them! when did the nhs start charging for these It was the first time so i would not have expected to pay......

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on NHS Choices. We are sorry to hear that you were surprised to be asked to contribute towards payment for your lost hearing aid. This has been standard practice in the NHS for over eight years now. We do provide patients with notification when they are issued with their hearing aid that should they be lost or broken that we will need to contribute to the cost of the replacement and we apologise if you did not receive this information. If you feel that you should not pay there is an appeal process and we would be more than happy to consider your application. If you wish to appeal, please contact the ENT Department on 0191 233 6161 for an application form.
