"Before surgery in the Day surgery ..."

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Before surgery in the Day surgery unit, I was kept well informed, I was treated really well. I was made to feel at ease. I was really happy with this part of my care. When I was took through to theatre I was again kept well informed, I knew what was happening and why. My operation was carried out with no complications and I was treated very well in recovery. All of the staff I came into contact with during the above were kind, caring, thoughful and very knowledgable.

What could be improved

Nothing regarding the above, it was all handled really well. See below from when I went onto the ward though.

Anything else?

When I moved to the ward it was unforutnately a very different story. My care was poor, I was left with bloody sheets etc. I felt everything was just too much trouble for the majority of the staff. Having said that, some of the staff were pleasant and caring but they were in the minority. Staff were not answering buzzers but you could hear lots of them laughing and joking whilst patients were waiting for assistance. I have been at DMH with my children on 3 occasions over the last few years and have written good feedback on those occasions as the staff and care was wonderful so I was really disappointed my care was so poor. Luckily I was only in hospital overnight, as that really was enough. Two of the patients I was sharing a ward with had been in for 9 days and they were even more upset at the care they had received than I was. I have found the whole situation quite upsetting as I am proud to have our NHS system and appreciate how great it is to have.
