"Emergency Medical Unit"

About: St Thomas' Hospital (London)

Having been admitted to the unit from the A&E department whilst I awaited a transfer to KCL I stayed the night on the EMU. The staff I came into contact with on the 21 July during the late afternoon and the night staff, including the consultants, were gracious and very caring and understanding of my medical issue. However the staff leading the department on the 22 July left me feeling angered. I was disgusted to see how the management of the unit (the lead consultant, sister and deputy charge nurse) were more focused on creating bed space than giving care and providing their staff with support. I was shocked at the way they handled a clearly vulnerable person, who should have been given greater support and care for his issues, rather than turfing him from his bed and kicking him back out on the streets with quite severe shakes. I understand the need and the pressure on beds but surely patients should come first? I hope that poor young man does not come to any harm and that in the future the department takes the vulnerability of people like him seriously and refer onto the relevant team before they kick them back out onto the streets.
