"Cataract surgery to both eyes"

Both procedures went very well. Right eye took longer to get vision back but on speaking to nurse after operation went back and was completely satisfied with re-examination and comments of doctor. Left eye was done on 12 July and everything went well and now a little more than a week later very, very happy with the result. My consultant advised me in the beginning and his advice has given me a new lease of life i did not realise just how wonderful colours are and not having to wear spectacles is an amazing bonus. Only one little upset and that was i live alone and could not get home from the hospital after surgery. I spoke to the hospital transport who were very understanding and arranged for me to be taken home. The nurse on duty on the 12 July took great exception to this fact and kept going on and on about it to whoever would listen. She tried her utmost to embarrass me in front of everybody. Fortunately the ambulance people were extremely good and understood my plight. It is not fun having no-one to turn to in this situation but i did not deserve having her constantly going on about it. For her information i have worked all my life, paid all my dues and taxes and had to retire from work with work related injuries. I worked for 50 years of my life and hope that she can do as well as i did. I think i deserved a lift home don't you. It is a shame that she spoilt what was a nervous experience anyway. It is the likes of her that spoil the great job the NHS does especially staff at the Essex County.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience and that the nurse made you feel embarrassed. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. I am advised that patients are expected to make their own way both to and from the hospital. Hospital transport is only provided if there is a clinical need which is determined by the team responsible for your care. These comments do get passed on and noted by the matron of the service. In future if there is not a clinical need for you to be transported by us, you can ask to book a taxi from the hospital but you will need to pay for this. (If you are entitled to claim travel costs you can ask for advice from the receptionist by the way.)
