"Treatment fo broken wrist"

About: The Princess Royal Hospital (Telford)

I fell and injured my wrist on Friday evening and was taken by ambulance to Princess Royal. I was assessed very promptly and given pain relief almost immediately. Then I had an X-ray to determine the extent of the injury. Staff explained the situation and the treatment they were going to undertake. They re-set the broken bones and put on a plaster cast. The staff advised that it would be necessary to put in a metal plate and screws, and that they would perform the surgery as soon as possible the next day. A surgeon explained the benefits and the risks of the procedure in simple terms, and then I was taken to a ward to rest overnight. My husband and daughter were allowed to stay with me throughout the process. On Saturday the plate was inserted in my wrist and my husband and daughter were allowed to visit me after the surgery even though it was outside normal visiting hours. Medical staff advised that they were very happy with the outcome of the surgery, but that they would keep me overnight to ensure my recovery was uneventful. My husband was advised to call the hospital at 10 on Sunday morning to see when I would be discharged, which he did. He was told that I would be discharged at 12 noon, and I was. Throughout my stay in the Princess Royal, the treatment I received was absolutely outstanding. The staff were thoroughly professional and efficient but, at the same time, full of patience, tolerance and very good humour. We watched the staff handle two very difficult patients, one of whom became quite abusive, without any sign of anger or frustration. We were kept fully informed of what was happening or about to happen and were made to feel very welcome. From the surgeons through to the nurses, orderlies and ladies serving the food, the attitudes were wonderful. They treated me, my husband and my daughter with respect, care, and a wonderful ability to see and share the funny side of an otherwise depressing situation. We were absolutely amazed by the positive atmosphere, and extremely grateful for the wonderful care we received.
