"The new Brunel building"

About: Southmead Hospital

(as the patient),

I made my first visit to this brand spanking new designer showpiece building and there are some things which have not been thought through properly.

It is trying to look and feel like an airport terminal (I mean "gates"! ! Really? )

It is an unacceptably long walk from the front entrance to the end of the pink zone - so, why not a moving walkway like an airport?

The first WCs marked on the floor plan (next to the information desk don't exist (phase 2 appareently! ) -so cover up that bit of the plan!

When you do finally find the nearest WC (half way up the long walk) You barrel right into the people exiting as you have to go around a blind corner.

The screens telling you where to go from the waiting areas are a great idea - except it is not made clear that all the names that keep flashing up on the screen are not necessarily sitting in your area but are probably in other areas - I was surrounded by some very confused and disgruntled pensioners who assumed they were being kept waiting by a load of people who were late for their appointments.

The booking/reception desk for each "Gate" appears to be hidden around the back of the stairs/lifts monolith. There were no obvious signs to show you where it is - granted, you don't need it on the way in to a clinic but you do need to take your bit of blue paper to them on the way out.

All of that said, it looks like a good building, very pretty etc and I am sure we will all get used to the silly airport pretense.

Dear Hoppity58 – thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your helpful and constructive criticism of the Brunel Building. It is true to say that the design has been met with mixed views, and while some patients are very happy with the design and signage, others have pointed out some issues that need to be addressed to improve the patient experience.

All of the information is being collated to allow improvements to be made where possible, and I have fed your comments into this review.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards -
