"Told I had HIV before I'd even had a blood test"

About: Good Hope Hospital / Accident & emergency Good Hope Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I was admitted into hospital with really bad fever, severe sweats and lumps on body. I was seen by a registrar who did a full check up and asked my mum and sister to leave the cubicle to speak to me alone. He told me I had HIV. He hadn't even done any kinds of tests - no blood test, no nothing. Just a visual check. I obviously panicked but knew there was no way possible it could be the case.

However when you are told by a professional you have HIV, you are obviously going to start doubting yourself. He didn't even give any possibilities what it could have been, just straight up HIV.

I was kept in hospital in isolation for 2 nights and it was a nightmare. It made me feel a hundred times worse only then 2 days later did I get diagnosed with it being just a viral infection and my HIV results coming back negative.

In my opinion that doctor was very unprofessional telling me I had HIV without even doing any tests and having any results. I am very disappointed as to how wrong and seemingly unprofessional someone could possibly be. He made my stay at Good Hope Hospital a living nightmare.

Response from Good Hope Hospital

Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your admission to Good Hope Hospital. I am extremely sorry for any anxiety that has been caused to you, having been advised by a registrar that you had HIV without any tests being carried out. I would like to reassure you that we take seriously any issues our patients, families and friends may have and your feedback is important to us. If you would be willing to provide further information (eg: Registrars name (if known), where you were seen), please contact the Patient Services Team on 0121 424 0808 or via email at patientservices@heartofengland.nhs.uk and our team can contact the relevant team, so the issue as to why a diganosis was given without any tests being performed can be looked into. Kind regards Jenny Langham Patient Services Team.
