"Lifelong dreaded operation went well"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / General surgery

(as the patient),

I am getting to the age of 53 years and only previously needing 2 minor operations done under local anaesthetic. I found myself recently needing the lifelong "dreaded" operation. I had nightmares about this since childhood and was absolutely petrified, even more so after my pre-op when the doctor rang to advise that due to my other illness the complications would be "too dangerous" to put me under general anaesthetic and a "spinal" was requested. I was mortified, however I needn'y have worried. On the day of my operation from start to finish the staff were marvellous. They were very caring and kind and explained everything. In particular my anaesthetist who I think was called Dr Saul, a Lithuanian beauty, who was so gentle and caring. I never felt a thing. The worst thing for me was that Theatre staff failed to explain to ward staff that I'd had a spinal and I didn't pass water for 7 hours which resulted in great pain which caused me to vomit and I had 1000mls of water drained out (slighty embarassing!)
