due to my volunteering within my local health Board and local Authority, I am very lucky to know quite a few people from health and LA within Ayrshire & Arran.
I had asked one of them if he could help me and did he know anyone from IT within NHS Tayside, Ninewells hospital, could they get internet access to my dad to watch me doing my Baton Relay (live) within North Ayrshire on the 15th July 14.
I did ask only the day before, thought I would be pushing my luck for the short notice, but he pulled it off, he had spoken to someone who was going to sort it out for me.
The next day they had 2 ladies take 2 laptops to his room, they took 2 just in case 1 didn't work (that's what I call good planing) my dad was over the moon that he could see me doing my baton, it was a once in a lifetime event for me and my dad was so proud that I was picked to do it.
When he had to go into hospital he said he would watch it on the news (if I was on it), he wanted my son to take a good picture of me with the baton, as a keep sake. So for him to watch it live was fantastic.
I would like to thank everyone that was involved with making it happen.

This is such a great story on all fronts. Well done for all your hard work volunteering and getting picked for such a prestigious honour. It is wonderful to hear we can pull things like this off, short notice and all. (Who says the NHS is slow?)
I will be extremely pleased to pass this on. I do know that Derek Barron keeps a close eye on the Patient Opinion site, so when he returns to his desk, he will get your post and your thanks direct from the ‘horse’s mouth’ as it were.
It is particularly heartening to know that your Dad got to see you, I am sure it will have made his day and his year!
On another note, we now have free Wifi in our Libraries and in some other area, perhaps in time you may get your wish.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about the positive experience your dad has had at Ninewells. This was a team effort between NHS Ayrshire and NHS Tayside.
After Derek called our associate nurse director Gillian, she asked our Communications Team to look into the possibility of organising live streaming of the baton relay by a laptop for your dad. They were more than happy to help and indeed took an extra laptop in case of technology failure! They said that your dad was extremely proud and emotional watching you. We are all delighted that we could do this little thing for you both so you could share your special event with your dad. We realise the value of WiFi access to patients and hope to be in a position to introduce it across the hospital in the coming year.

Thanks for your comments, it was my pleasure in helping, and I'm glad I could.
To be honest it was a simple phone call to Gillan Costello, Associate Nurse Director in NHS Tayside - Gillian then liaised with their Comms Team and I had a phone call back from them within 15 mins re how. The work to make this all happen was all at the Tayside end - I'd like to also add my thanks to them for making this happen, it was a great response from a colleague(s).
I'm glad your dad got to see you with the Baton, as you say, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

I saw my Dad on Sunday, he was so happy that he seen it and was looking much better, he has moved rooms and now has a lovely view from his window of the water and he see it from his bed, gave him a frame with the photos of the day so has that next to bed now to.
He has been in hospital for a wee while now trying to fight his infection before his op, I think positive environment and the baton has made a difference for him to feel better to fight his infection better and its not all down to medicine he takes, happy mind, happy body.

Glad to hear your dad is getting there, albeit slowly - you'll have heard the expression 'No health without good mental health', you've hit the nail on the head when you said 'happy mind, happy body', meds are great and important, but so is mental attitude.
Hope he gets rid of the infection soon and gets his op.
