"surprising behaviour from a sister"

About: James Paget University Hospital

I did not receive an appointment letter as the receptionist informed me on the day of the appointment that she had been too busy to send one. The sister in charge at gynaecology outpatients then attempted to weigh me on a dirty chair in front of a waiting room full of patients. I stopped her, told her she needed to clean the chair and that I wanted some privacy. I asked the receptionist why I needed to advise a member of nursing staff to clean the equipment and to afford me some privacy, by not weighing me in a room full of people. She replied that this is how they have been told to do it. How utterly ridiculous. My first visit to this hospital and I was amazed by this 'sister' and her lack of empathy and professionalism. Dirty equipment and no consideration for her patient. A horrible start to a distressing appointment.

Response from James Paget University Hospital

We are sorry that you found your care not to be as you would like, and that the scale was dirty; there was a mark which I understand was cleaned immediately. The department is aware of your concern, but if you would like to talk to us about it in more detail, please do get in touch with our Patient Advice and Liaison Team on 01493 452340 or the department itself. Gynae has just moved into the new department following some recent refurbishment and there has been a settling in period of changing working practices to suit the new environment. We have been aware that we could not provide a private area for weighing patients and are exploring options to obtain a screen for this purpose. In the meantime, since these concerns were raised, we have arranged for patients to be weighed in a consulting room. On this occasion a letter was not sent following the appointment made through Choose and Book, although this is normal practice. Ann Filby, Head of Communications
