"A&E night experience"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

I was taken to A&E via ambulance at about 3am on Sunday morning after an onset of abdominal pain and other symptoms. The ambulance crew were calm, efficient and really prioritised getting me to hospital after their initial assessment. On arrival I was admitted quickly (but without much humane contact from the nurse who was busy with the computer). I was grateful for a side room as I loathe the idea of mixed sex bays and the lack of privacy. I was quickly given medication for pain relief and other symptoms which I appreciated so much. The S/N allocated to me was responsible and carried out regular check ups and gave me and my partner all the information we asked for. The A&E doctor was kind and systematic in his assessment. I had a series of tests and investigations carried out over the next 10 hours which clarified what was going on. All of the above I really appreciated. I was impressed that staff generally knocked and waited to come in and introduced themselves. Hand washing was also very good. What let the service down was the surgical team; their poor communication skills and poor infection control especially in regards to hand washing. The surgeons walked in, I could see no name badges, they didn't always introduce themselves or how they were connected to the doctor who had been to see me a few hours earlier. I was seen by 4 or 5 different doctors. They all had a junior doctor in 'tow' who didn't introduce themselves and seemed to stand back and be a note taker. They came in wearing blue gloves or putting them on - no hand washing seen. I was also given a probable diagnosis by a doctor in a very casual way (for me it was serious news and a shock). Overall, I was satisfied with the nursing and A&E care I received; which as a nurse myself it gives me great hope!
