"COPD- the patient story after various Blue light journey's"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Respiratory medicine

(as the patient),

Where do you start? I have read articles relating to patient experiences of how the system treated them?

There Is No no malice intended in my notes of my experiences, in the past 6 years. The first hand service I have received is second to none with some minor exceptions- no one but no one knows what you are going through except you. They have seen the state before and know what helps but when the light is going out at the end of the tunnel and the 14 miles to Hospital feels like 400 you panic, and I also read about how difficult it is to stop smoking, my answer to that is rubbish 60 to 0 overnight we have a Breath Easy group that members have to have a smoke break one of the reason's I packed it up.

I also read about Re-Hab great but after the allotted time you're on your own, we in Dumfries were very fortunate to acquire the use of NHS Gym foc so we started our own group of which a founder member which runs well. And is overseen by our ex carers in hospital.

I also read about our feelings for the care we got when we were poorly, the DGRI respiratory team are beyond words of praise nothing but nothing was a problem to them even the consultant and his team, far too many to name but I personally owe my life to them all.

I also read how to stop re-admissions to be a priority and how to keep you out, well for my tuppence worth is slow down with the discharge.

Personally I have returned within a week, not good on the patient or the ones at home, I know its a bit of a rant but there you are I am still here adjust your world there are always is someone less fortunate than you

Dear Dixie777

Thank you for taking the time to make your thoughts known. It is so helpful when feedback is received as it provides opportunities for learning and improvement. Your feedback is particularly welcome as is contains so much support and gratitude for the respiratory team at NHS Dumfries and Galloway. I have cared for many patients over the years who have come to hospital experiencing difficulty in breathing and I know how frightened they have been and seen the relief in their face when symptoms are relieved. It does mean so much to staff when their hard work is recognised.

All staff go to work and want to do a good job and provide care with compassion. But we are all human and sometimes things go wrong which may explain the 'minor exceptions' you refer to. I am sorry you experienced these moments, however I am so grateful you have the grace and goodwill not to dwell on such incidents. Currently there is a great deal of work going on across Dumfries & Galloway to improve patient experience, aimed at avoiding unsatisfactory care of any kind.

You sound very motivated becoming involved in after care groups, enagaging with the NHS in this manner brings about such a positive way to help improve services for the benefit of all patients, carers and staff.

I will pass on your thoughts on patient discharges to the Discharge Planning Project Officer.

Thank you again for your support of the NHS Services in our local community.

kind regards

Hilary

Hilary Hi,

I do appreciate your reply and it has done what the intention was ( to get the message back to the people at the sharp end ) and it looks as if you are the person to do just that Thank you, You will have probably guessed that I for my sins are one of the old brigade and say what I think and not whats wanted to be heard, one hears so many disturbing stories regarding the DGRI and when you know they bear little truth, as said small incidents happen but we are human arent we?, I felt I had to say something in support of all those people that are under pressure all the time, I have been in industry and its nothing like the pressure the teams have to bear

kind regards
