"staff friendly and ward clean"

About: Kettering General Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

staff friendly and ward clean

What could be improved

Actually getting the surgery that i went in for. Also my brother who had an overnight stay at the treatment centre and my mother who stayed in clifton ward for two nights had private rooms and facilities but the people who are in for major surgery who are in for about a week and are the ones who could do with some peace and quiet and privacy put six to a room with shared toilets and no chance of any sleep- no one in my bay got any. I know funds are limited but surely this is the wrong way round.

Anything else?

The claim that 97% get treated in 18 weeks seems like a joke to me. I saw my consultant on the fifth of September 2008 for an annual routine follow up after knee surgery. This visit stated out as May 2nd but three cancellations later became September. I had mentioned on my previous visit I was having some pain in my right side and that it was now much worse. I had x rays and was put on the list for surgery for a hip resurfacing procedure. I was told it should be in November and as I had not heard by mid November I contacted the waiting list office and was told I was not even listed by the end of the year. I then recieved a letter to come in on January 7th for surgery on the next day. On January 7th I contacted the hospital and told to wait as no beds were available. Eventually I was told to come in early the next day but when I arrived was sent home and later told the procedure was cancelled. I asked the PALS office what were the options as the 18 week time had now passed. I then was contacted by them and offered surgery on Feb 5th which I accepted. On Feb 4th I went in and on the morning of the fifth was ready for theatre when the procedure was cancelled again because of bad weather and I was sent home. No one can control the weather but this now means I am on the 6th month since going on the list. Why are people having surgery this week who have waited half the time I have going ahead when myself and others told to go home and wait for another letter. Over the last few months my hip has become much worse and am barely able to do my job now and may have to go sick when I should be well on the way to recovery by now.

I was sorry to read of your experience and the fact that your most recent date for an operation at KGH had to be cancelled due to the severe weather. We are working hard to ensure that all patients us are treated within 18 weeks of being referred to KGH by their GP and in over 90% of cases have been able to meet this target. Unfortunately on occasions we have to cancel planned surgery because of large numbers of emergency patients or other unusual circumstances such as severe weather conditions.

All cancelled patients are rescheduled as soon as possible after the cancellation and I hope that this will have been your experience. If this is not the case please do not hesitate to contact the Waiting List Manager 01536 493454 or our Patient Advisory and Liaison Office 01536 493305
