"Pain management"

About: Colchester General Hospital / Accident and emergency Colchester General Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

A couple of weeks ago I had the misfortune of having a kidney stone. After finishing a night shift I went home to be bed and woke up shortly afterwards in complete agony (never known pain like it! ). I phoned my wife who took me into A&E which thankfully was not too busy. The other patients although I'm sure had good reasons for being there we're not showing signs of being in complete agony like I was and this was clear to the receptionist. Despite being in obvious pain I had to wait about 15 minutes to see the triage nurse who after giving me a couple of pills then realised that it was something that needed immediate treatment and got me to majors where even Morphine hardly shifted it. I would recommend that when booking in patients that are in clear pain are fast tracked to triage. Maybe ask them what level their pain is, I personally would not mind someone in genuine pain jumping ahead of me if I was not in too much discomfort.

However once in Majors I cannot praise the care enough, also the care in EAU was also excellent (Nurses Michael and Maria). The following morning the stone must of shifted of its own accord alleviating the agony. The consultant Mr Casey was also very good.

A week later I went for a follow up X ray and again the radiologist was very good and even showed me my original x ray with the offending blockage.

Overall the standard of care was very good.

Thanks
