We visited the fracture clinic 8 weeks ago, as the result of a fractured toe. We were given the opportunity to come back for a follow up in six weeks, or we could wait and see if there were any problems, and make an appointment to return if we felt it was necessary.
We had a detailed discussion about activities that could be undertaken, and where caution was needed, and left feeling reassured. Six weeks on, we were still experiencing pain on a regular basis, so made an appointment to return.
At this appointment the experience was the polar opposite. We were informed that there was no problem, as there was no fracture, and this department only deals with fractures. When I tried to explain that we had been informed that there was a fracture (and a cast had been applied), I was told I was lying, and I had been told on several occasions there was no fracture.
I asked what to do, as there was still significant pain, at which point the doctor took a cursory look and told us to go, as "this is a fracture clinic and there has never been a fracture". I have never experienced such rude and dismissive behaviour from any professional, let alone a healthcare professional. Before we had even left the room, they had turned their back on us, and ignored us.
At the end of the two minute "consultation" I had to ask for the name of the doctor so that I can make a formal, complaint. At no time did they introduce themselves.
The consultation also took place with the door to an ante-room open, with a member of the clerical staff sitting there throughout.
I am appalled.
