"Ark Royal Ward"

About: Gosport War Memorial Hospital

I have been very pleased with the improvement my relative has made since transfer to the ward. I was very dubious having read the previous comment but it has been totally unfounded. The visiting times are acceptable, as these elderly people are poorly and do need to rest a lot. Also being given the opportunity to go to the dining room and meet with others, instead of a tray by your bed, has a good social effect. It is good for them to know they are not the only one whose mobility is compromised, needs help to get to the toilet, and worries about being a nuisance. Although it should not be pressed too far if they feel unable to go. On the whole staff are helpful, obviously there are a couple who come over as abrupt and rude but I dont think it is intended. They don't realise how stern they sound to a vulnerable person. Encouragement is better than scolding, and allowing time for stiff muscles to work again after sitting, instead of rushing because there is lots to do. It is no good saying that the person will not go home if they don't try. They always try but results are small, and this needs to be recognised. But as I said, this is only the minor few. Most staff realise that they are rehabilitating a person to get them home quickly. I have been kept well informed of processes and requirements, changes in medication, and been asked my opinions of the treatment available. I have been given ideas on how to prepare the home, equipment needed and care package sorted - all with my welfare taken into account. My relative has enjoyed the food, although remembering what it was is a problem! I was a little disappointed with the amount of stimulation available. A patient just sits in the chair waiting for a visitor, if they are well enough to get out of bed. I am not sure if they are asked if they would like to watch television. They could perhaps go to the dining room for a game of cards or dominoes with other patients, to break the "When Am I Going Home" tunnel vision. I believe QA has a memory box of jigsaws, puzzles and other mind stretching activities. Most of the patients are hard of hearing so conversation is difficult for them across the ward, they could be seated closer to each other for a time during the day. Finally, I think the cleanliness is very good. My only concern is that when tidying around the patient, remember they cannot move far to get things, and with memory problems things need to be in a sensible, regular order. It may be your hospital but their personal treasures, and the only thing they feel in control of. I would have no problems in recommending the ward and staff, just remember to communicate, not just complain. Be reasonable, see the bigger picture and things can be as smooth as silk. Many Many Thanks Indeed.
