About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

in doing the prelimanary eye test before appointment, for some unexplainable reason the drops caused my eyes to sting and burn, this has never happened before, i stated that i could see shadows and duplications of all letters, so i just read them i did warn them i memorize things, after ten minutes in the waiting room i was appauled to hear the consultant discussing my case with the nurses in the passage, thank goodness there was only five of us in the waiting room hardly professional, we can hear. As i was able to read the so-called chart he said i could not be registered partially sighted i have armd and am only 52 and was 48 when diagnosed, three times i asked him to read all that i had written down about falling misjuding things burning myself thinking things were closer or further away, he started, them just put them down and said general wear and tear. This gentlemen was very dismmisive, not willing to listen and did not want to know, only when i got upset did he say he would send me for specialist tests at the rvi but they couldnt help, and this man specialised in macular degeneration, if he does not like coming up to berwick swap with someone else to do the shift if not treat people with more respect, its frightening losing your vision, and the last thing you need is to treat as if you do not know anything, i could go on but there is no point, it gets you no-where hopefully i will deal with other people in the dept from now on.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on NHS Choices. We are very concerned to hear that your experience in the Ophthalmology Department at the RVI was not to the standard we expect to deliver to our patients and that this was a cause for such concern. As your comment was posted anonymously, we are unable to look into your concerns in detail, and are keen to do so. It would, therefore, be helpful if you could contact Ms M Gray, Directorate Manager on 0191 233 6161 as soon as possible to provide more details of your visit.
