"End of life care for my father"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

I cannot thank this hospital enough for the wonderful way in which they looked after my father in the last few days of his life in ward C1. Both he and all of his relatives were treated with the utmost care and respect at all times. The doctors and nurses made sure that my father was never in pain, that he was always given a daily body wash and shave, that his dressings and "tubes" were constantly changed and cleaned and that he was always treated with gentleness, dignity and kindness. Relatives were allowed to stay at his side constantly throughout the four days that he was in hospital in his quiet side ward so that we could say our goodbyes in privacy and without interruption. The Bereavement team were also excellent: very dignified, compassionate yet extremely efficient and helpful. We found this level of service was universal throughout the hospital. We could not have received a better service in any other hospital, private or NHS. In fact, I suspect that this hospital would knock spots off most private hospitals!

Please accept our sincere sympathies on the loss of your father, and thank you so much for posting your feedback about the care he received during his stay on ward C1. It is so important to us that you felt he was treated with care and respect during his last days, and that you and your family were able to be with him in private to say your goodbyes. Our doctors and nursing team aim to offer the highest standards of care to all patients to ensure they are treated with respect, kindness and compassion at all times, and especially when someone is nearing the end of their life. We understand that saying goodbye to a loved one is a very emotional experience and can be extremely difficult. It is comforting to know the bereavement team were able to offer a dignified and efficient service when you needed it the most. We have passed your thoughtful comments on to the teams involved in your father’s care.
