"Complete lack of triage"

About: Ripon and District Community Hospital

I arrived having had knee surgery the previous day. The wound was bleeding and Harrogate hospital had asked me to attend Ripon minor injuries to have it checked and redressed. The non clinical member of staff on reception appeared more interested in asking if we had called 111 than any clinical issues despite us telling him twice that we had spoken to Wensleydale ward at Harrogate and they had asked us to attend. He was plainly trying to act as gatekeeper and find a reason to tell us to go somewhere else - all this time I was bleeding. There was no triage at all. People arriving after us were seen before despite the fact that I had blood soaking through my dressings. I was finally called through and taken to a little cubby hole of an office to be informed there were no cubicles available. Thankfully another member of staff heard this excuse being trotted out and offered to swap. Had there been sufficient triage in place I can only assume the member of staff attending to me would have known that it was not possible to assess and redress the wound on a wheelie chair in a cluttered office that certainly was not clean to clinical standards. On finally accessing a cubicle the nurse efficiently dressed and checked the wound. Many thanks. It is just a shame that the fiasco preceding this treatment left me less than confident in this department.
