My father was admitted to the QE last month. Although the nursing staff are on the whole brilliant, the doctors have been less than average. The trouble is there are too many doctors seeing my dad who is 86 and was admitted with breathing difficulties, he has been through the mill over the last few weeks, but the problem we are experiencing as a family is sheer frustration as to what is happening.
He was due to come home at the end of last month only to be disappointed later in the day to be told he would not be going home because they had concerns about his kidneys. I will list the various illness's he has been treated for, breathing difficulties, sugar levels up and down (type 2 diabetic) at one point in the 1st week his sugar levels were 28. 5, but his food was not being monitored, given steroids for the breathing which reacted badly with the diabetes, was told one day that he was being taken off the steroids by one doctor and then the next day that he was still being prescribed.
Nobody seems to know what the other one is doing.
Finally he was told he was told he would not be coming home because he needed a scan, results from the kidney scan showed an aneurysm on his aorta measuring 7cm, which obviously is very serious.
He was told that he would have a CT and then be visited again by the consultants to decide what way to move forward, it is now. and he is still waiting for his scan a few days on, there is no sense of urgency, meanwhile we as his family are worried sick.
The communication between us (the family) my dad (the patient) and doctors is appalling. I arrived at the hospital one day during my fathers stay at 10am and spoke to the staff nurse who said she would get a message through to the doctor that we would like to speak to them, I waited until 6. 30pm and then my sister was there until 7.40pm, no scan and no doctors. I am lodging this complaint in the hope that someone can do something to help us, we are getting nowhere and meanwhile my dad is getting more and more depressed, worrying about my mum who had her 3rd lot of chemo for lung cancer in the last week. Please help
