"The worst experience ever"

About: Derriford Hospital / Hepatology

(as a relative),

In my experience Hound Ward seems a complete shambles. About one in three of the nurses that I met were very helpful and went beyond to help with questions etc. There were others that were rude, seemingly speaking to you like you were something on the bottom of your shoe, when you have a family member with a long term illness which you have been caring for 24/7 and you are very switched on with their day to day problems. Meds let's not go there. My relative missed at least 2 lots of drugs usually lunch and dinner, even when it comes to having nebulisers etc for breathing (which I may add is a must) because the drug chart was not there. Really? Liver transplant patients not being able to have rejection meds because there's no chart?! For me this was the worst experience ever. Because of this, the patient was terrified and never wanted to go back to hospital.

That said we had to go back in, was put on Marlborough Ward and it was the most wonderful experience. Maybe they could pass their compassion and work ethics on to others.

Dear mich65

I am sorry to read your comments about your relative's experience on Hound Ward and will share these comments with Matron and the Ward Manager, either of whom I know would want to listen to your concerns and those of your family.

We would very much welcome further contact with you in order to look into the issues you have raised to gain a clear understanding of where things went wrong. We can be contacted at plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net and sincerely hope to speak to you soon.

Thank you for your message and your positive feedback regarding your relative's experience on Marlborough Ward which I will share with the Ward Manager and Matron for that ward.

Kind regards

Mary

Dear mich65

Further to our posting yesterday, I just wanted you to know that Matron and Sister on Hound Ward were extremely saddened to learn of your family's concerns in relation to your relative's care. Matron and Sister have asked me to reassure you that they have shared your feedback with the wider nursing team, in particular your comments about the attitude of some of the staff and concerns about delays in administration of medication.

We are grateful that you have highlighted the points with us which has enabled us to raise these issues with the ward team for reflection.

Kind regards

Mary
