"Lack of care and respect during Birth of my baby"

About: Homerton University Hospital

Having experienced good antinatal care at Homerton I was expecting the same during my labour. I arrived at the hospital in the early hours having contractions which were quickly getting stronger. Myself and partner were told to wait in the reception to see a midwife. We were also told that night they were under staffed and there was only one doctor who was in an operation, slightly concerning! Anyway my labour picked up pace fast and after several requests to see a midwife we were still in reception. I was in agony by this point on the dirty floor contracting while others watched me. During this time other women were arriving in reception their waters breaking on the floor and nobody to clean it up it was horrible. Once seen I was told I had not progressed enough to go on to a ward!! although I was in agony it did not seem they had got it right. So we back into reception were I continued to labour on the floor, all I wanted was a bed. About an hour later I was screaming for gas and air but was told there was no equipment around. The midwifes took so long to do anything and were cold in their approach. Eventually after getting very angry with the receptionist about my treatment I was seen again. Now I wanted to push my baby out still no gas and air. The midwife who did my examination was so rough and lacked any basic kindness. It was then my waters broke and was rushed down to labour ward and given gas and air for the first time. By this time I was distressed. I was met by a midwife who was obviously over tired and wanted to go home. The midwife did not introduce them self, comfort me or let me know what was happening. Again I was handled roughly. The room was also not ready. Shortly after I then gave birth. If it was not for the support of my partner I don't know what I would of done. Thankfully I had no complications in my labour, if I did I hate to think how I would of been treated. The whole experience was very stressful and upsetting. I am disgusted at my treatment at Homerton.
