"We had to bring my 5 year old ..."

About: North Devon District Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

We had to bring my 5 year old daughter in unexpectedly whilst on holiday in Devon, from the Isle Of Wight. She was in the children's High Dependency for a few days, then onto the normal ward. All the staff on the Children's ward were fantastic. My daughter was looked after really well and the staff were all very kind and friendly. They went out of their way to help all of us and to make us all as comfortable as possible. The nurses and doctors kept us well informed and there wasn't a time when they didn't explain what was going on, so we felt aware of the situation and were continually updated on her progress. Everyone was very approachable and I felt confident in their abilities from the outset.

We were suprised at all the little extra touches that helped make our stay less traumatic - the making of tea and toast, the extra bed made up quietly and quickly and without fuss, the feeling that nothing was too much trouble.

The facilities were very good too and the restaurant had a great selection of food to choose from. I have told all our friends and family how happy we were with the care and attention we recieved.

What could be improved

The restaurant was very good, but we sometimes had to really rush to get down for dinner as it closed at 6.30pm, 7.30pm would have made a difference to us.

Anything else?

The car park entrance wasn't easy to find as I drove straight past it on my way in! - although I was quite stressed at the time. We also didn't find out about the discount on dinners with your parking ticket until near the end of our stay.

We didn't realise how long we were going to be there, but wished afterwards that we had bought a 5 day ticket for the car park as it was much cheaper and we spent a significant amount of money that we hadn't budgeted for on parking fares. When you are distressed it is quite easy to miss information about the mundane things such as parking, but it would have been helpful if someone had just mentioned the discounts.
