My mother was admitted to B2 on 15/6/14 Mom had a broken hip after a fall at her care home and needed a hip replacement. My mother has later stage alzheimer and dementia with challenging behaviour. mom was accompanied by 2 carers when she was taken to Russell hall who explained her condition and needs. We arrived on the night of her operation and we're told that she was behaving very confused and agitated, we told the nurses that she has dementia and their reply was ' we know' one nurse sucked her teeth at me and batted her eyes then walked away. We asked if she had had her medication because that usually calms her down, they said they had tried to give her a tablet but she refused. We advised them to crush her tablets and add any medication to a drink which they did and she took this fine. The next night we visited, we faced the same scenario, We asked if they had put her medication in her drink they said no but they would try it and they did. This went on for a week each time we had to tell the nurses how to administer moms medication. This was upsetting for us as each time we visited mom was very upset and agitated. We asked why it was not in moms notes how to give her her medicine and they said it was. The family have never been told what mom had done in hospital other than a hip replacement, no one discussed moms condition with the family, when we asked we were told to speak to a doctor but there was never a doctor available.
My sisters and myself are lasting power of attorney for mom and deal with everything to do with her care but we were treated as if we had no rights to know anything. Mom does not communicate she has no understanding of what is said to her or of her best interests. I will say that most of the nurses were pleasant to talk to but they did not seem to listen. mom has now been discharged back to the care home and will still do not know what she has had done. she has also had her medication increased doubling her dose which the home feel could have compromised her health. the home asked the family if we had been told why her medication has been doubled, when we explained that nothing about moms care in hospital had been discussed with us they were very surprised. moms medical needs were met as far as we now but moms and the families emotional needs were ignored and this really isn't acceptable.
"nurses ignored instruction for moms medication..."
