"Minor Injury Unit"

About: Gravesham Community Hospital

It's rather frustrating that if attending the Minor Injuries Unit with a child under 5 that may have a possible fracture, you will be redirected to Darrent Valley A&E department. My son and I sat in the MIU for over an hour to be told that the MIU can not x-ray a child under 5 and would need to be done in A&E. What a waste of time. Surely the commissioner or service manager can see that this is the wrong process and have the child triaged in a timely manner so that the correct treatment and investigations can take place in a timely manner and in the right place. Change the process so that patients are triaged quickly without the need for them to sit in the waiting area and then be palmed off to a hospital 8 miles away. This is all rather disappointing when on previous occassions I have had a good experience in using the MIU.

Response from Gravesham Community Hospital

We are very sorry to hear of your experience when you attended the Minor Injury Unit (MIU) with your son in January. As your comment has only recently been posted on NHS Choices we will need some further information from you in order to investigate what happened. For information, the guidelines followed by MIUs regarding x-ray are agreed between the MIUs and the local acute hospital (in this case Darent Valley). We use a process called 'Red Bar' which is what the receptionist uses to inform the nursing staff that there is an emergency. In the case of your child, the receptionist could have used 'receptionist concerned' and then asked an Emergency Nurse Practitioner to review and advise. Not all patients require an x-ray, this is only requested after a full examination by the Emergency nurse practitioners. It would appear that this process was not followed in the case of your child, and we are extremely sorry about this. We will investigate this fully, but would ask you to contact the Customer Care Team using the contact details below, in order for us to take some additional details from you. Thank you.
