"Overnight noise"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to this unit recently suffering from chest pains.

The medical care was excellent and I was kept in overnight. My comments are regarding the noise during the night I was there.

It seemed to me that the staff made most of the noise by speaking to each other in loud voices and at one point there was loud laughter. Also they made no attempt to lessen the noise of equipment being moved etc. I know that it is difficult to control disturbances during the night in this busy unit but surely the staff could try to keep their voices quieter so that the patients can get at least some sleep.

Dear Mrs Bruno,

I am sorry to hear that you have had to be admitted to hospital with chest pain but pleased to hear that the medical care was excellent. Thank you for acknowledging that controlling noise in a busy unit is difficult. However staff are aware of the importance of sleep for patients and should manage their communication accordingly.

Noise at night is something that has been raised previously by patients through the ‘Better Together Survey ‘and a campaign to reduce noise at night was launched and had a positive impact. That was some time ago and so a refresh with staff may now be needed.

I have spoken with Meg Park the Head of Nursing for cardiology and she will share your experience with staff to ensure that everything that can be done to minimise noise at night is discussed with the team.

Kind regards

Caroline McQuillian
