"NHS squint correction surgery at St Thomas' Hospital"

About: St Thomas' Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I was referred by my optician to my GP (A Clapham Family) who quickly set up an appointment at the eye department at St Thomas' for me. The issue was a squint which caused me to have permanent double vision.

Over the first 3 months I had a couple of consultations and checks before it was decided botox was the best initial treatment for me. I was informed of all the risks beforehand and the procedure only took half a day.

The Botox took a few days to set in, and then about 6 months to fully wear-off (which I knew before signing up to it). During this 6 months I had regular checks to test the results, all of the time being kept up to date by the department staff. Never did I have to chase to get appointment dates/times as the admin team communicated with me for each appointment seamlessly.

Following the temporary botox I had day surgery to permanently correct the muscles in my left eye.

Throughout all of the initial checks, assessment, pre-op consultation and the procedures and surgery itself, I was kept in the know about the findings and resulting courses of action and risks. Over the 10 or so appointments I had, only one was slightly delayed, and even so not by very long. All of the staff were fantastic, friendly, knowledgeable and kind.

Even though a longish process by the nature of the issue, I have absolutely no complaints. The final result is perfect single vision.

I couldn't recommend the Eye Department at St Thomas' highly enough, and am incredibly grateful to them all.
