"inconsistent standards and poor quality nurses/..."

About: King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill)

I have in a very short space of time had several inpatient experiences with serious background illness. The first experience was the best of the NHS. But after this things became sloppy.and deteriorted. The most recent was disgusting that I will avoid King's as a substandard hospital. I was moved three times. In the first ward- Oliver- patients were evacuated as the patient in the bed next to me had an infection requiring isolation- this should have been picked up before putting people like me in the next bed at any risk. I had to endure isolation for some days as a result, wit fear of a hospital acquired infection on top of pneumonia. Nurses did not give medication at the correct times (my own - prescribed by another hospital I attend because KCH is not at the 'forefront' of my illness. I was not allowed to take my medicines myself correctly on time on Twinng ward. The sister when told about noisy staff keeping me and others awake with their 'party' spirtts outside my room product an eye mask and ear plugs as a suitable response to bad staff behaviours. I had mouse running around my bed on the ward with droppings in my bedside cabinet with no one taking action for two weeks- until other patients too saw the mouse. To top it all doctors failed to pick up I had likely pneumonia until it had rapidly progressed so I could not breath- having seen mostly junior doctors initially who stated i did not have pneumonia, but would be started treatment as if i had because of high temperature spikes.. This is a poor quality setting with lack of excellence or skilled enough doctors to be treating patients like myself. I know more about my illness / comorbidities than they. appear to have. Too many juniors. and few really good nurses with high skilll levels.

I am very sorry that your inpatient experience has been such a source of dissatisfaction. I do not know whether you intend to register your complaint formally to allow us to fully investigate the concerns that you have raised. We would wish to have the opportunity to investigate and fully respond to your concerns. The email contact for the complaints department is kch-tr.patientcomplaints@nhs.net . Oliver ward is a medical assessment ward and often patients are admitted there from the Emergency Department. As investigations are undertaken to establish the cause of their symptoms situations can arise where an infection is identified which neccessitates infection control precautions but this may not be possible to immediately diagnose before admission to a ward area. Patients may also be transferred on to other ward areas once a diagnosis has been reached, although I am sorry that you were moved ward on three occasions. We would expect staff to immediately request the pest control team to visit the ward if any patient reported any form of infestation on the ward.
